Summary of Activities – June to October – Beira

The Mozambican Recycling Association – AMOR has a network of ecopoints located in different parts of Beira City. The Ecopoints, called Community Ecopoints, are found in community based organizations, dominated by OCB’s that work in partnership with AMOR.

During the months of June and July, these ecopoints carried out the activities of purchase and sale of solid waste at a pace differentiated by the restrictions applied due to the Corona Virus, the pandemic that has affected Mozambique and the World.

During this period, these community ecopoints collected around 30,000 kg of solid waste, which was immediately redirected to the appropriate sectors for solid waste management.

In the city of Beira, this activity continues to bring daily income to the collectors, many of whom depend on the collection and sale of waste to be able to provide for their families, being currently the only source of income for some collectors.

In August, within the scope of the Environmentally Friendly Citizens Project, funded by the European Union, the Mozambican Recycling Association started with the training of Municipal Inspectors on the basis of the New Municipal Posture in force.

Three training sessions were held involving 8-10 inspectors, aiming to improve their work quality with regard to monitoring solid waste in the city. The training, carried out in stages, will involve at least 40 municipal inspectors and will be carried out in partnership with the Beira Municipal Council,

In September, another specific activity of the Citizens Friendly of the Environment project was carried out, this time the launch of the “competition for the requalification of 4 public spaces in the city of Beira”.

In partnership with the Municipal Council of Beira, the contest aims to select 4 public spaces for urban requalification in the city of Beira, a selection that will be aimed at Community Based Organizations, registered in the province of Sofala who work in the neighborhoods of the city .

Amor also paid attention to World Cleanup Day, holding an event in September to collect waste at Praia dos Veleiros. Approximately 9000 kg of waste was collected, with emphasis on organic waste, and it had about 200 people, separated in areas and properly protected in order to respect the safety rules in the face of the new pandemic.
