Summary of Activities – December & January
In December of 2017, the Escola Primária Completa Unidade 13 concluded the school year with an event. In this school, AMOR was working with the “Project of Selective waste collection and Enviromental Education”, which is based on raising public awareness and educate them in terms of environmental education. At the event, it had different activities such as: typical and modern dance, chant, academic challenges and an exhibition of objects made by the students of the Enviromental Club, all of the objects were made of reused waste. Besides that, AMOR also exhibited objects made of reused waste and give a speech of good practices of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reused and Recycle). During the same period, we were part of the meetings to manage the Let’s Do It Moz, a global civic movement which reached Mozambique in 2017. This it will be the biggest cleaning positive impact that the world ever watched, it wil happen at September 15th, 2018 in all over the country. Summary of the Environment and Citizenship Project
The end of the project Environment and Citizenship for the year 2017, implemented by AMOR – in 5 secondary schools in Maputo City covered by the project, namely: Josina Machel, Polana, Francisco Manyanga, Eduardo Mondlane and Estrela Vermelha, with the aim of promoting in the students awareness of citizenship so that they become proactive in society using the environmental side with the support of AGIR-Action Program for Inclusive and Responsible Governance through WE EFFECT-Swedish Cooperative Center. We managed together with the CACs: To develop various environmental activities such as the reuse of recyclable waste: We plant seedlings and fruit trees in schools Through the school ecoponto recycle approximately 1700kg of metal, paper and plastic And build a Christmas tree with the PET bottles collected at Roque Mission Square. Make visits to the Municipal Assembly and the Directorate of Health and Cemeteries, to the Botanical Garden – Tuntunduru Visiting and supporting the Don Orione Orphanage Elaborate 5 suggestions for the improvement of solid waste management in the city of Maputo. Participate in environmental actions such as cleaning days. We reward schools according to the quality of waste separation We offer a certificate of participation for members of the CACs Above all, we managed to make young people aware of being proactive in building a healthy environment and exercising citizenship. We now expect that environment and citizenship clubs will continue to be active in their schools and community. We are grateful for the support of AGIR through WE EFFECT, the Maputo City Council, school boards, environmental and citizenship clubs and all those who directly and indirectly contributed to the success of this project. Summary of activities – November – Maputo
During the month of November, the Action Plans of the Citizenship and Environment Clubs were carried out under the “Environment and Citizenship” project in 5 secondary schools in Maputo, implemented by AMOR with the support of AGIR through WE EFFECT. Their objective is to promote citizenship awareness in students so that they become proactive in society using the environmental aspect. This month, the winning schools of the “Recicla Ganha” contest was announced during the closing event of the year. It presented the quantities of waste collected during the contest and different activities like dance, song and poetry organized by the members of the clubs. Eduardo Mondlane Secondary School was the winner, with Polana Secondary School ranked 2nd and Secondary School Red Star Altogether, in total 1681kg of paper, metal and plastic were collected this year, most of which happened to be paper with a total of 1239kg collected. Within the framework of the same project, AMOR in Maputo city set up an ecological Christmas tree in Zimpeto neighborhood, on November 29, 2017, about 4m high, having reused approximately 3000 PET bottles collected in schools. In the framework of the partnership with General Electrics, AMOR held a cleaning day on the 4th of November in a 300m plot at the beach of Costa de Sol with the objective of promoting cleanliness and awareness for the use and conservation of the sea and the environment in genera. During this event, AMOR organized diferents activities like: waste collection, environmental education, re-use workshop, educational play about solid waste management and gymnastics. At the end of the day, fifty-five bags with 50 kg capacity were collected, containing broken bottles, PET bottles, cans and common trash. About 100 people attended the event, including: General Electrics employees accompanied by their children, students from the Environment Clubs of Primary Schools Units 13 and 29, representatives of the Environmental and Citizenship Clubs-CACs, beach vendors, AMOR employees. Then, in the street of Nachingwea 494, on the 18th of November was held the event entitled “Beyond the City Cement-Digital Solutions for Problems of the Informal” organized by UX, Maputo Fast Forward 2017 who invited AMOR. The objective of the event was to make society aware of the peripheral Maputo and explore solutions using technology, and exposed a physical scenario that makes us travel to the peripheral neighborhoods around the themes of gastronomy, Urban Waste Management problems, urban scenery exposed through photos, music and more. Also in November, as part of the “Project for Selective Collection and Environmental Education in Primary School Unit 13”, which aims to develop awareness-raising activities and activities related to environmental education in (EPC) Primary School Unit 13, Chamanculo neighborhood, implemented since June 2017 by AMOR with the support of the AVSI Fundation, a recapitulation of the handicraft sessions was carried out where bags were made with juice packs, bracelets with PET bottles and bags with magazines. Meanwhile, in the framework of the project “Biocarvão in Vilankulos” AGIR support through WE EFFECT whose objective is to increase the resilience of the small farmers of Vilankulo through the use of improved and not improved biochar in their fields thus increasing the productivity and longevity of the farms reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers, continues the monitoring of the groups in the improvement and application of biochar.
Summary of Activity – October– Maputo
As part of the “Ambiente e Cidadania” project in 5 secondary schools in Maputo City implemented by the Mozambican Recycling Association with the support of AGIR-Action Program for Inclusive and Responsible Governance through WE EFFECT-Swedish Cooperative Center whose objective is to promote in the students the awareness of the citizenship so that they become proactive in the society using the environmental side. During the month of October, members of the environment and citizenship club participated in four (4) sessions of skills and crafts to mention: Introduction to the concept of politics and Disclosure Concept of the “Recicla e Ganha” Contest as a grant to reinforce citizenship knowledge; Paper-based coal production (in 2 weeks) as a way to strengthen reuse knowledge and alternatives to reduce tree felling; Training of Club members on theater techniques of the oppressed as a means of social intervention to change attitudes; Preparation of CAC’s action plans. Parallel to these activities the representatives of the CACs visited the Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Health and Cemeteries Department where they had the opportunity to find out about its operation and clarify doubts about the services provided. Another visit was made to the Botanical Garden with the purpose of knowing the rich collection of the diversity of trees, shrubs and flowers for the contribution of the improvement of the environment. Also in October, as part of the ” Projecto de Recolha Selectiva e Educação Ambiental na Escola Primária Unidade 13 “, which aims to develop awareness-raising activities and activities related to environmental education in the Primary School Unit 13, Chamanculo neighborhood, implemented since June 2017 by AMOR with support from the AVSI Fundation, lectures on the importance of trees and newspaper-made pots were given as a way of intensifying knowledge about the importance of re-use. We participated in the FICA – Immigrant Culture and Art Festival that welcomed people from various nationalities such as: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Brazil, China, India, Portugal, France, Holland, Belgium among others, where AMOR on its stand exhibited and made handmade activities through the reuse of solid waste for children and adults and exhibited awareness posters. Finally, as part of the project “Biocarvão in Vilankulos”, we support the WE EFFECT-Swedish Cooperative Center whose aim is to increase the resilience of Vilankulo’s small farmers through the use of improved and unproven biochar in their farms, thus increasing productivity and longevity of machambas reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers, in October the improvement of the biochar for the small farmers to use in their fields where 7 groups improved the biochar with bovine manure and 3 group with guano (bat feces).
Summary of Activity – September – Maputo
In March 2017, the project “Environment and Citizenship” was launched in 5 secondary schools in the City of Maputo implemented by the Associação Moçambicana de Reciclagem with the support of https://agirmozambique.org/AGIR-Program of Actions for Inclusive and Responsible Governance through WE EFFECT- Swedish Cooperative Center whose objective is to promote the awareness of citizenship in students so that they become proactive in society using the environmental aspect. During the month of September, members of the environment and citizenship clubs participated in four (6) training sessions, namely: 1. Identification of problems related to solid waste management (GRS), focusing on the problems that can be solved by the Municipality and the Municipality as a way of diagnosing the state of waste management in the municipality; 2. Production of gift bags based on magazines, elucidating to CACs the importance of reuse and fortifying the motto “Garbage becomes luxury”; 3. Possible solutions for solving GRS problems identified in point 1., which constitute proposals for improvement of GRS by the Clubs, to be presented to the CMM; 4. Planting of seedlings in schools, where each CAC has planted 5 seedlings that should be cared for by them in order to contribute to the intensification of knowledge about the importance of planting trees for the environment; 5. In addition to the activities described above, a training session was held on the paper production process as a means of subsequently evaluating the benefits of paper recycling; 6. Allusive to the celebrations of the International Day for the Cleaning of Rivers and Beaches, the CACs together with the AMOR Team participated in Operação Caco LÍNGAMO second edition of environmental education action through the cleaning, in Matola A on September 16, 2017, a an initiative created and led by the Environmental Education Cooperative Ntumbuluku. Note: The training sessions are accompanied by dynamic and educational games with the purpose of exchanging learning and relaxation. Also in September, under the “Project for Selective Collection and Environmental Education in Primary School Unit 13”, which aims to develop awareness-raising activities and activities related to environmental education in the Primary School Unit 13, Chamanculo neighborhood, implemented since June of this year by the Mozambican Association of Recycling – AMOR with the support of AVSI Fundation, gift boxes and wristbands based on PET bottles were produced as a way to intensify the knowledge about the importance of reuse. In recent weeks there have been lectures on the importance of selective collection and water saving.
The Environment and Citizenship Project – June – MAPUTO
[barre] In March 2017, the “Environment and Citizenship” project was launched in 5 secondary schools in the Maputo City implemented by the Mozambican Association of Recycling with the support of AGIR-Program of Actions for Inclusive and Responsible Governance through WE EFFECT- Swedish Cooperative Center whose objective is to promote the awareness of citizenship in students so that they become proactive in society using the environmental side. During the month of June, members of the environment and citizenship clubs participated in four (4) training sessions, namely: • Lecture on citizenship addressing the subject in general and its application in the school environment as a way of knowing their rights and school duties, volunteering for candidacies and electoral campaign of the president, vice president and treasurer; Sensitization of students and cleaning agents to the Ecopoints on procedures for their use and conservation; • Democratic elections of the representatives of the Clubs (President, Vice President and treasurer) simulating the electoral process, from the campaign to the voting; Explanation of the “Recicla, Ganha” contest as a way to encourage students to contribute to the quantity of solid waste in the Ecopoints (each school earns 2.00 Mtn in each kilogram, gifts and prizes offered by AMOR and partners); • “Bracelets and Earrings” rubbish bin: we train club students in crafts by reusing solid waste by producing bracelets and earrings from PET bottles and scraps of capulana and used clothing; • Projection of environmental education film “The Right Way” that reminds students of the importance of recycling and reuse due to the quantity of waste produced in the City of Maputo and Matola, and their discussion about the film; Explanation of the production process of PET bottles as a subsidy for the perception of the importance of reuse and recycling.
The Environment and Citizenship Project – May – MAPUTO
[barre] The Mozambican Association of Recycling since March 2017 is implementing the Environment and Citizenship project in 5 secondary schools in Maputo, namely: Josina Machel, Polana, Francisco Manyanga, Eduardo Mondlane and Estrela Vermelha which objective is to promote awareness among students Of citizenship so that they become proactive in society using the environmental side with the support of AGIR- Program of Action for Inclusive and Responsible Governance through WE EFFECT-Swedish Cooperative Center. During the course of May 2017, the students of the Environment and Citizenship clubs had 4 training sessions, namely: – Lecture on the use of ecopoints for students, signing regulations and collecting student lists; Raising students’ awareness about recycling in the hours of concentration for the National Anthem intonation, larger intervals and collecting the lists of clubs in coordination with the responsible teachers; – Presentation of the project and creation of the clubs; Official presentation of the AMOR team and the Environment and Citizenship project to the students of the clubs; Were trained in solid waste management in the field of recycling with the introduction of 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle); – “Tetra Pack” portfolios: to teach club students to value waste by making portfolios from juice or milk packets; A way of enabling them in knowledge of handicrafts by reusing recyclable waste contributing to sustainability; – Visit of technicians of the Office of Civic Education and Environmental Promotion of the Municipality of Maputo and We Effect. The technicians talked about solid waste management policy and MOPA-Participative Monitoring which is a digital platform for monitoring and evaluation of solid waste collection services in the neighborhoods of Maputo City through the code * 311 # and through an application that Is downloaded at http://www.mopa.co.mz In addition to these activities, clubs were also given T-shirts, focal points (Teachers), cleaners and school principals.
The Environment and Citizenship Project – April – MAPUTO
[barre] AMOR- Mozambican Association of Recycling has been implementing a project called Environment and Citizenship in 10 secondary schools in the city of Beira, since last year and will cover 5 more secondary schools in Maputo, namely: Josina Machel, Polana, Eduardo Mondlane, Francisco Manyanga and Estrela Vermelha in coordination with the Department of Education and Human Development of Maputo City with the support of AGIR (Action Program for Inclusive and Responsible Governance) through WE EFFECT. A recycling infrastructure in each school named Ecopoint will be installed in the 5 schools covered, as collection points of recyclable material being a container for paper (cardboard, newspaper, magazines, boxes …), plastic (bottles, bags, Buckets, chairs …), the metal (cans …) and also a bin for ordinary Waste . The quality of the separation will be evaluated monthly (the % of the waste placed in the Ecopoint) and taken into account in the calculation of the Green Points. At the end of each quarter, schools will receive the amount corresponding to the accumulated Green Points. The Environment and Citizenship Clubs and the school board will be responsible for the use of the money received quarterly, using participatory budgeting practice. In addition to the ecopoints, Environment and Citizenship clubs will be created, composed of 30 students and 2 teachers. Of these, 15 are from the classes in the morning and the remaining 15 in the afternoon. Students may participate on a voluntary basis, or they will be selected by class teachers considering gender equality, with no age or class preferences. The members of the Clubs will elect 3 representatives democratically, being President, Vice and Treasurer. Once a week, the CACs will meet at a time and room available defined by the school board and the topics to be developed will be counted on the guidance of an AMOR technician and two teachers identified by the school. The themes to be developed monthly will be environmental and citizenship, both in terms of theoretical and practical content, with the right to different material according to the activities to be implemented. In addition to encouraging the remaining students and the school community to use the School Ecopoints, they will link the project with civil society, focusing on the Municipality, but also on the private sector to collect more recyclable material.
The art and craft project’s activities based on recyclable waste – MAPUTO
[barre] With the support of GIVE A HAND, AMOR – the Mozambican Recycling Association is implementing the Art and Craft project out of recycled material with the aim of training women and young people (ecopoint managers and AMOR employees) in the production of handicrafts and Microentrepreneurship. The project was launched on August 18, 2016. The activities take place every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in AMOR’s office. Since August, the participants already have had 13 sessions of which: – 10 sessions of craftsmanship where they learned how to make handbags, handbags, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, vases and puffs; – 3 sessions of micro-entrepreneurship where they learned what business management is, how to apply prices on the articles produced and where to sell their products (markets). From the 1st to the 5th of November, AMOR participated in the fair of the European week that took place in the Fisheries Museum. During this fair two participants of the class of Handicraft sold articles produced by them with recycled material. (See below the sales monitoring chart for the month of November).
Cleaning day carried on the 5th of October with support of General Electric – MAPUTO
[barre] AMOR, with the support of General Electric, organized on the 15th of October 2016 a session of cleaning on 200 metres of the beach in front of Super Marés at Costa de sol. General Electric is a firm that, in Mozambique, focuses on the businesses development and try to built the future of the country through significant investments in various industries, including Oil and Gas, Transports, and Energy management During this cleaning activity, we also organized different workshops about recyclable materials that cannot be bought in the actual recycling market of Mozambique. We used for example Tetra Pack packaging to make wallets, small plastics PET bottles to produce a “go and come” toys, big PET bottles to make decorative boxes and news paper to create table mats. We also exposed the diversity of the handicrafts courses productions. Moreover, organized a session on environmental education by opening a conversation supported by different pedagogical images, illustrating the consequences of waste pollution. To cloture this event, all the participants (AMOR and General Electric Staffs, 40 children) beneficiated of a 30 minutes dynamic zumba class provided by the gyms club In Motion & Igym General Electric also organized a lottery to win a gift basket. The money collected with the sell of the tickets will be used to support the children of the Oncology department of the Central Hospital in Maputo. We are really greatful for all the participants contribution: – Around 40 students involved in the environmental clubs of the primary school Unidade 29, and their 4 teachers, clubs that were created during a partnership with the AVSI foundation at the beginning of this year. – The General Electric staff, – The staff of the two gym clubs In Motion and Igym – The staff of AMOR – As well as the users of the beach and the citizens interested by the environmental preservation.
