Environment and Citizenship project – BEIRA

[barre]

In 2014, AMOR launched the pilot project Recycle and Win in 14 schools in the southern region ( 10 schools in Maputo and Vilanculos 4 schools ) with the support of Millennium BIM . The waste separation plant has been installed (for paper, plastic and metal) and created an Environment Club in each of the 14 participating schools. The clubs were trained in environment, waste management, with the role of coordinating the activities and encourage other students of schools to ensure the maintenance of their school and their city. Through the sale of recyclable material and / or the support of sponsors, each school received 1 Mt for each kg of collected recyclable material, which was used by schools for the purchase of educational and sports equipment. The best schools won additional prizes.

This initiative was replicated in 2015 both in Maputo and in Vilankulo and having checked the positive impact of the project Recycle and Win (REGA) during the period in which this took place, it was developed a similar project adding citizenship component to town border that is being implemented since the end of 2015 in partnership with the European Union in 10 secondary schools in the City , including :1 ). Samora Machel Secondary  School , 2 ) Mateus Sansão Mutemba  Secondary School , 3 ).  Ponta Gea General and Secondary School , 4 ) Marrocanhe Secondary School, 5 ) Nhangau Secondary School , 6) Matadouro Secondary School, 7) 25th September  Secondary School  , 8) Muchatazina Secondary School  , 9) Manga Secondary School, 10) Estoril Secondary School. This in close coordination with the district offices of Youth Education and Technology of Beira and the Municipal Council of Beira. And on 12th of February the placement of the first scholar collection point was made. Note that the Ecopoints also get separate recyclable material providing the private sector and civil society who want to ” sponsor ” the school by donating their separate recyclable material. The program aims to promote among students (citizens of tomorrow) citizens’ awareness so that they become pro active in society, with a special focus on waste management. So with this initiative we hope to contribute to the awareness of young people and the improvement of environmental management in the city.
