Summary Project Environment and Citizenship – BEIRA

The “environment and Citezenship” Project aims to promote among students(citezans of tomorrow) citizenship consciosness to turn them into proactive citizens. Using the environment as a vector of citizenship, the project encourages students in the exercise of their duties and rigths, their role ande responsibility for the school environment and the city.

In this contex, it has been installed a recycling infrastructure in 10 schools of beira, called Ecoponto, which is basically a separate waste collection points for paper (including cardboard, newspaper, magazines, boxes…), plastic (bottles, bags,buckets,chairs…) and metal (cans…) and also placed a container for nom-recyclabe waste.

in addtion to the ecopoints, they were created clubs of Environment and Citizenship (CAC) cnsisting of 30 students and 2 teeachers. Of these 15 are the classes of the mornig and the remaining 15 in the afternoon. Students were selected in each classe by teachers considereng gender equality.

Members of CACs are elected 3 representants in a democratic manner. Once week, the CACs met a set time in a room provid by the school with the guidance of a coach AMOR and two teachers. Tey receive a mobthly training environment and citizenship, both in terms of theorical and pratical content. each month, it will be offered to CACs different material according to the activites to be implemented. In addition to encouranging between the project and civil society, with a focus in the city but also in the private sector( for raising more recyclable material).

It was in this context that was the first meeting of the representatives of CACs with the representative of the City of Beira, it is expected that at the end of each year the members of CACsmay make suggestions in order to improve the management of municipal waste in Beira.

Also during first quarter CACs, under the guidance of instructors of AMOR, held various activities wihich aimed at strengthening their relationship with the environmnent, among which stand out the tree planting; cleaning day on the beach in Estoril in Beira.
