Annual Reports 2023-2025: From Pilot Projects to 1,000 Tonnes Removed, and the Birth of Blue Coins

In 2023, AMOR launched pilot projects to pay communities for the waste they collect. In 2025, that work closed with about one thousand tonnes of waste removed from Mozambique’s beaches, mangroves and waterways, roughly what the city of Beira produces in a year.

Today we are sharing our Annual Reports 2023-2025, showing what we did, what we achieved and how funds were used.

2023: Laying the foundations
With the support of the European Union, Eco-Civismo Moçambicano began training civil society organisations in nine municipalities to take part in local environmental governance. On the Macaneta Peninsula (Marracuene), with Italian Cooperation, we carried out the first waste purchase traced in the KOLEKT app: 4.8 tonnes. In Beira, the first waste purchase at the Praia Nova mangrove removed about 18 tonnes in a single day, with around 165 participants.

2024: Scaling up
Three new coastal projects started in the same year: RRCM (Coastal Waste Resilience in Mozambique, with the UK Government and ORRAA), Matutuíne Limpo and Pescador-Catador. We set up eco-clubs in schools in Pemba, Vilankulo, Chimoio and Sussundenga, and trained local organisations in digital tools, management and fundraising. The KOLEKT platform passed 4,500 registered users, and AMOR received Friedlander’s “Ma Petite Planète” social responsibility award.

2025: Results and Blue Coins
RRCM closed in September in Beira, during the 3rd Marine Biodiversity Conference.

  • ≈ 1,000 tonnes of coastal waste removed
  • 3,679 people supported through clean-up campaigns
  • 63% of participants were women
  • Plastic collected by communities rose from 600 kg to 37 tonnes

On Earth Day we launched Blue Coins: each kilogram of waste collected, verified in KOLEKT and paid to the collector becomes a certified Blue Coin that companies and individuals can finance. 5 USD = 10 Blue Coins = 10 kg of waste removed. At the launch at Praia do Estoril (Beira), 11.3 tonnes were collected, 10.8 of them by waste pickers. In December, Regis Mozambique ran its first campaign in Pemba, and awareness sessions were held with Deloitte and Access Bank.

Transparency in management
Over three years, AMOR mobilised EUR 3.9 million in institutional funding (2023: EUR 1.32 M; 2024: EUR 1.87 M; 2025: EUR 0.72 M). Each project has its own dedicated bank account and is audited individually, with audit reports shared directly with donors. AMOR’s donation receipts are recognised by the Mozambican tax authorities for tax-exemption purposes.

What comes next
The priorities set by our General Assembly are scaling Blue Coins with the private sector, fundraising for new coastal projects, strengthening KOLEKT and consolidating institutional and private-sector partnerships.

Thank you to the communities, waste pickers, schools, municipalities and funders who made this possible.
